In late March 2025, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, a 24-year-old American YouTuber known for his adventurous content, was arrested for illegally entering North Sentinel Island, home to the isolated Sentinelese tribe.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety and rights of uncontacted indigenous communities.
Unauthorized Expedition to a Restricted Territory
Polyakov arrived in Port Blair, the capital of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on March 26, 2025. On March 29, he embarked on a solo journey to North Sentinel Island using an inflatable boat equipped with a motor. After a nine-hour voyage, he reached the island’s northeastern shore.

Polyakov attempted to attract the attention of the Sentinelese. He did so by blowing a whistle and left offerings, including a can of Diet Coke and a coconut, on the beach. Moreover, failing to make contact, he collected sand samples, recorded a video, and departed the island.
Legal Repercussions and Potential Penalties
Upon his return, local fishermen reported Polyakov’s activities to authorities, leading to his arrest on March 31. He faces charges under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Amendment Regulation, 2012.
Additionally, if convicted, Polyakov could face up to five years in prison.
Historical Context and Indigenous Rights
North Sentinel Island is inhabited by the Sentinelese, one of the world’s most isolated tribes. The Indian government has enforced strict regulations since 1956. They prohibit any approach within three nautical miles of the island. This is in order to protect the tribe from external contact and potential exposure to diseases against which they have no immunity.

Moreover, previous unauthorized attempts to contact the Sentinelese have resulted in fatalities. We can mention the 2018 death of American missionary John Allen Chau.
Public and Expert Reactions
Polyakov’s actions have been widely condemned by indigenous rights organizations and experts. Additionally, Caroline Pearce, director of Survival International, labeled the incursion as “reckless and dangerous,” emphasizing the severe health risks such contact poses to the Sentinelese.
Authorities are also scrutinizing Polyakov’s prior visits to the Andaman Islands, during which he allegedly attempted similar unauthorized activities.

The arrest of Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov underscores the critical importance of respecting the rights and protection of indigenous communities. Moreover, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of violating laws designed to safeguard vulnerable populations and preserve their way of life.
