In a bold move, the Trump administration is offering undocumented migrants $1,000 and a free plane ticket — if they agree to leave the U.S. voluntarily.
The offer was confirmed by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who described the “self-deportation” program as the safest and most affordable option. Migrants who accept will not be targeted for arrest or detention, at least for now.
Did Trump Really Offer $1,000 to ‘Self-Deport’?
How It Works
The program works through the CBP Home app. Migrants can use it to confirm their departure and return to their country of origin. The Department of Homeland Security says the goal is to reduce the high cost of deportation — currently more than $17,000 per person.
The first flight under this new program has already taken place. A migrant reportedly flew from Chicago to Honduras with travel expenses covered.

Could They Return Legally?
Trump hinted that those who self-deport might have a chance to return to the U.S. legally in the future. He said the government may consider allowing “good people” back — but only under strict conditions. No specific policy on that has been confirmed.
Mixed Reactions
Supporters see the offer as a smart solution to reduce overcrowding and enforcement costs. They also point to the administration’s early success in cutting border crossings and increasing ICE activity.
But not everyone agrees. Critics call the offer a “bribe.” Congressman Adriano Espaillat said, “We don’t bribe people to leave. We build a country where everyone belongs.”

Big Numbers, Bigger Promises
While illegal border arrests reportedly hit a record low in March, critics say the administration is still far from meeting its deportation goals. Legal battles have also blocked some of Trump’s harsher immigration plans, including attempts to change birthright citizenship.
What’s Next?
It’s unclear how many people will take the $1,000 deal. But the offer shows how far the administration is willing to go to enforce its immigration agenda — even if it means paying people to leave.
Would you take the money and walk away?
